Geography & History :
Almora is located at an altitude of 1800 meters, Almora was founded in 1568, on a ridge at the southern side of the Kumaon Hills of the Himalaya range. In the shape of a horse saddle shaped hillock it is surrounded by thick forests of pine and devdar trees, flowing alongside the city are rivers of Koshi(Kaushiki) and Suyal(salmale) and to top it all are the snow capped Himalayas in the background.Kasardevi at Almora is a wonderful place to conveniently enjoy the spectacular snowscape of the central Himalayas. Most of the days in Almora are flawless. Almost everyday the tourist can see almost every peak. Almora allows you to enjoy the mighty Himalayas together with ridge after ridge of hills.The terraced fields, the stone slatted barrack-like village houses have so far put up a valiant fight against the encroachments of urban expansion and unplanned development. it is also a gateway to world famous temples like :-Kasar Devi, Banari Devi, Chitai, Jageshwar, Rudreshwar Mahadev Temple(near Sanara Ganiya), Binsar Mahadev, Garhnath, Baijnath, are some of the few notable ones.
Rudreshwar Mahadev Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and it is situated on the bank of the river Ram Ganga. A sun temple (only the second in the world) is located at Katarmal a short distance from the town.
